Internet Cafes

When abroad, you will probably need to access the Internet. Sometimes this is just to do research about your destination, to book tickets or to stay in contact with loved ones. Sometimes, however, you need to sort out an emergency, in which case the Internet becomes your best friend. It can be frustrating, especially in an emergency, to look up and down for an Internet cafe and not be able to find one. In a panicked state, you might not see one that is almost in front of you. It might, therefore, be useful to find the names and addresses of several Internet cafes in places you ae going to. While I have never used the site, I think Cybercafes.com is a great idea and could prove really useful. In fact, I am going to use it for before going on my next holiday.

Is the Water Safe?

Some countries do have good quality tap water that is safe for drinking. That said, the chemicals used in different countries might vary, thus still making tourists sick. While you can visit this site to see what they think about the quality of tap water in different countries, I am still going to stick to bottled water.

No Planes; Trains and Ships

If you are not comfortable flying or do not like it for some other reason, or if the romance of a bygone era appeals to you, you might prefer to travel overland by train and between continents by ship. You can get info on these alternative means of transport from the man in seat 61.

Reviews of Hotels, Guesthouses etc.

Before you book, even if you are using a travel agent, do your research. Find out if the place you are thinking of staying at is likely to meet your needs and if there is a reasonable chance you will be happy there.

Here are some sites I use to find out what other travellers think:

Trip Advisor (See note 1 at the bottom.)

Virtual Tourist (See note 2 at the bottom.)

Hotel Club

Trav Buddy

Hotels.com

Global Hotel Review

Agoda

Expedia

Asia Rooms

Booking.com

Note 1: Tripadvisor does not allow users to post reviews of places of accommodation that do not fit their criteria, whatever these criteria might be. That means that there may be a fantastic or terrible place out there but you might never get to hear about it from Tripadvisor.

Note 2: Virtualtourist is now part of the Tripadvisor group, hence the number of Tripadvisor reviews on there. It used to be a really nice review site and is still reasonably good but has definitely gone backwards in my book.

Sabotaging the Saboteurs

Okay, it might be somewhat unfair to call some accommodation establishments saboteurs but some do engage in dishonest marketing practices, be it deliberate or accidental. Oyster.com specifically sends investigators to different places to take candid photos. They then post their photos alongside the marketing photos and give their opinion on how honest or dishonest they think a particular business has been.

Sleep in the Airport Terminal

If you really want to save money, do not check into a hotel or even a hostel. Simply sleep at  the airport. For advice on how to go about this, visit Sleeping In Airports.

Traveller Phone Home

Sometimes when you get to another country, you have a local telephone number with you that you brought with you. The problem is that the number you have has an international dialling code and perhaps another dialling code, neither of which you might need to make your phone call. Instead of guessing which part of the number represents the dialling code(s), you can look this information up at CountryCallingCodes.com. This website is also useful so that you know which codes to use to dial family and friends at home from the country where you are. Not all countries, for example, use 00 as an international access code.

View Your Itinerary

It is sometimes useful to view your flight itinerary as there may be information on there that is not on your ticket. You might also find that details of your flights have changed even though the airline had not told you. (Yes, another so-called five star airline messed up whereas an airline that is supposed to be the pits communicated clearly each change of schedule, each of which was not drastic.)

When you book a flight, you will use, whether you know it or not, a booking system, usually Amadeus or Travelport. Depending on which booking system you use, you will need to go to a different website to view your itinerary:

Amadeus       Check My Trip

Travelport       View Trip

Sabre       Virtually There

Weather Underground

Besides the cool name, I like this site because it gives extended forecasts. It also has a lot of other information like air quality, which would probably be important to people with severe allergies. They also have temperature information of nearby airports. I really like this weather website.
