Flight Duration

Sometimes an airline or travel agent indicates clearly on a ticket how long a flight will be. However, sometimes they leave it to you to work out, which can be done quite easily although it does become a bit tedious when you have to cross time zones. I like Travel Math because it gives me an approximate idea of the duration of the flight. That way I know how long I need to pinch. I just remembered: airplanes have toilets onboard. All that suffering on 12 hour flights was for nothing!

Food Onboard Your Flight

Those of us who fly often get tired of hearing "chicken or fish" or some such line. Still, even for the most jaded of us, it is interesting to see what might be on the menu on our next flight. In fact, some airlines have really nice food. Flying Singapore Airlines brings back such fond memories. Malaysia Airlines' Business Class catering was phenomenal (I got lucky and was upgraded - ONCE). To all the airlines out there, please bump me up on every flight. What do you mean "no"?

Go With The Cargo

If you want to save money on travelling costs, travel by freighter might be the way to go. Travltips is one of the companies that deals with freighter travel. Something I also like about them is that they offer other types of cruises, including Mississippi Steamboats and Viking Longboat cruises.

You could also visit Freighther Cruises to see what they have to offer.

Help A Little To Get A Lot

If money is extremely tight but you really would like to see the world, you might consider working for someone, be it to do gardening or painting or whatever else they need done. In return they give you free accommodation. It is then up to you to go out and see places. Helpx is one of the sites that offers people this kind of opportunity.

Other sites that offer similar opportunities include:

Work Away

PoD (they look for volunteers for projects ranging from looking after elephants to helping with building projects)

Hitchhike Over the Internet

If you like seeing everday where life takes you and you prefer not to plan too far ahead, you might want to visit RoadSharing.com. Here you can find out who is offering lifts to different places and perhaps get a lift to a different city or country, depending on where the driver is going. Of course, they may ask you to pay part of the travel costs, which is not completely unreasonable.

How Safe Is That Airline?

Flying is the safest means of transport and is in many ways a wonderful and exciting way travel. Stll, there are unfortunately some airlines you really should not fly with because they probably will crash. It is a shocking comment on the management and possibly the maintenance engineers of those airlines that they think likfe is cheap. I want to help you stay away from those kinds of airlines and steer you towards airlines that deserve your patronage. The website Airsafe.com is a good resource to help you do this.

You might also want to find out how old an airline's planes are. You really do not want to fly in Noah's ark. Check out this website, Planespotters (no, there will be no drugs involved).

While there is some controversy around these lists, you can always find out which airlines have been blacklisted by the EU or the United States. You might be flying with an airline that goes nowhere near the EU or the US but they may very well be on the blacklist. You decide if you trust the list and you decide if you are willing to trust the airlines on it with your life.

How Will You Get There?

This website is great! Think Hipmunk, only with more options. It shows you how to get from one place to another and suggests flights, trains, cars or a combination of these. Taking a direct flight might seem like the best way to go but it is not always. Rome 2 Rio also shows you days on which specific airlines fly to your chosen destination. That saves a lot of time - you do not have to spend time on airline websites guessing which days they fly where (a lot of airline websites fall very short when it comes to searching for flights).

Immerse Yourself in a Book

A lot of people read on holiday to pass the time, especially when on a long plane trip or bus ride. That is nothing new. What I thought was a great idea, however, was the one proposed by PackABook.com. They suggest books you can read based on the country you are visiting. That way, you can be immersed in a book and at the same time the culture and milieu of the country you are visiting. It makes travelling even more exciting when you get to see places or perhaps even meet characters that you read about in a book. Very cool.
