Local de Lux

Rustic luxury in a Brazilian eco-inspired resort emphasizing localism

In 2009 Wilbert Das, former Creative Director of Italian fashion label Diesel, opened his eco-chic retreat, the UXUA Casa Hotel (pronounced oo-SHOO-ahh), located in the remote fishing village of Trancoso on Brazil’s breathtaking Bahian coast.

Founded by Jesuits in the 16th century, Trancoso has the air of time stood still, preserving over centuries its stunningly simple architecture, unspoiled nature, endless stretches of pristine beaches, and rich local traditions.

Trancoso’s heart is its picturesque Quadrado – a grassy hilltop square closed to traffic and anchored at one end by the simple white, 400-year-old São João Batista church overlooking the sea. The Quadrado is surrounded by dozens of brightly painted one-story fisherman casas which have remained unchanged over centuries.

UXUA is composed of four of these antique Quadrado casas, and another six homes (including a rustic treehouse of reclaimed wood) discreetly spread under fruit trees of an adjoining 5,000 sqare meter garden.  All are filled with Bahian art, antiques, and custom-made furniture. The hotel blends harmoniously into its environment without even signage to indicate its location.

UXUA’s lush grounds include a restaurant, bar, library, gym, spa, as well as a stunning pool made of 40,000 pieces of green aventurine quartz, a local crystal thought to possess healing powers; all is complemented by the UXUA Praia Bar, a spectacular beach-front lounge shaped from old fishing boats an 8-minute walk from the Quadrado.

The hotel was built by local artisans working over two-years using traditional building methods and reclaimed and organic materials. The project combines local craft with contemporary concepts of space and light which nod to Wilbert’s international work in fashion and interior design, with the end aesthetic best labeled rustic modernism. The overall UXUA philosophy is something of the reverse of globalism, but instead a celebration of all things native, an ideal Wilbert Das refers to as localism.

UXUA’s emphasis on the local extends to its menu, which is regional Bahian composed of the freshest locally-sourced seafood and produce, as well service, which is deeply personalized, with every detail thought of and delivered by a staff who host in the friendly style of the region, as if welcoming guests into their own home.
